Historic Lustron House in Jackson
in need of Relocation
One rare historic Lustron home is in danger of being lost forever if it is not relocated. Haven’t heard of a Lustron home before? Lustron was a manufacturer with a new concept after WWII to build modest ranch houses entirely out of steel. Both the interior and exterior wall surfaces were constructed of porcelain-coated steel to be maintenance free and the houses even included built-in furniture. Kits containing all of the parts and an instruction manual for putting them all together were delivered to house sites across the U.S. But the idea never really took off, and only 2500 were built, with very few surviving today. The house in Jackson is an “02 Model” and is approximately 1000 square feet. It features a living and dining room, kitchen, utility room, one bath, and two bedrooms. The house retains original interior built-in features. Type in “Lustron Homes” in any search engine to find more information about this unique type of housing.
If the Lustron house in Jackson, located near the corner of McDowell and Terry Roads, is not moved by the end of the year it will be demolished for commercial development. For more information and pictures of the house call the MHT office at 601-354-0200 or e-mail info@mississippiheritage.com.
